Abstract: In watermarking and data hiding context, it may be very useful to have methods checking the invisibility of the inserted data or at least, checking the objective quality after the mark embedding or after an attack on the watermarked media. Many works exist in the literature dealing with quality assessment mainly focused on compression application. Nevertheless, visual quality assessment should include special requirements that depend on the application context. This chapter presents an extended review of both subjective and objective quality assessment of images and video in the field of watermarking and data hiding applications.

Abstract: 1D-mosaics have been introduced as a tool for structuring and navigation in video content. These objects can be considered as the spatio-temporal signatures of the video shots. Our work aims at grouping automatically the video shots into scenes using these signatures. The original method is based on the tree-structured lattice vector quantization of the 1D-mosaics. Because of the hierarchical structure of the code-books, they can be compared progressively, and lattice use is time efficient. Indexing retrieval results are given for two video sequences, and different mosaics are successively compared to each other in order to assess the presented scheme’s effectiveness.

Autrusseau, F. and Guédon, J. Perceptual image watermarking using a secure Mojette transmission scheme 2003 4th Workshop COST 276, Transmitting processing and watermarking multimedia contents  inproceedings
Abstract: The purpose of this work is to provide a complete secured image watermarking and transmission scheme. Depending on the treated application, the requirements usually vary. Besides the ability of the presented scheme to embed copyright information in images, a perceptual criteria has been taken into account, as well as a secure encryption technique adapted for data transmission. Finally, a multiple description decoding is also considered via a robust data transmission technique ensured by the Mojette transform redundancy properties.

Abstract: The work presented here deals with digital image watermarking and a new Fourier based embedding method is presented. The watermarking location scheme optimization is performed by the use of a psychovisual criteria suitable with the Fourier domain and given from properties of the model of the human Visual System (H.V.S.) The watermark design and extraction exploits the Mojette transform properties which are recalled. The embedding as well as the extraction processes are described and exemplified through some classical attacks onto a standard image.

Abstract: The work presented here deals with watermarking algorithms. The goal is to show how the Human Visual System (H.V.S) properties can be taken into account in the conception of such algorithms. The construction of the watermarking algorithm presented in this paper needs three steps. In the first one the selection of auspicious sites for the watermark embedding is described. The selection exploits a multi-channel model of the Human Visual System which decomposes the visual input into seventeen perceptual components. Medium and high frequencies are then selected to generate a sites map. This latter is improved by considering some high level uniform areas. The second step deals with the choice of the strength to apply to the selected sites. The strength is determined by considering the H.V.S. sensitivity to the local band limited contrast. In the third step, examples of spatial watermarking embedding and extraction are given. The same perceptual mask has been successfully used in other studies. The watermark results from a binary pseudo-random sequence, of length 64, which is circularly shifted so as to occupy all the sites mentioned above. The watermark extraction exploits the detection theory and requires both the perceptual mask and the original watermark. The extracted watermark is then compared to the original and a normalized correlation coefficient is computed. This coefficient value allows the detection of the copyright.

inproceedings
Abstract: This paper describes a new methodology for image watermarking which is suitable both for copyright protection and for data hiding. The two presented algorithms are based upon the morphological mathematics properties of the Mojette Transform1 (denoted as MT in the following). The main properties of the Mojette transform are roughly recalled and the linked concept of phantom which depicts the null space of the operator is presented. Theses phantoms are implemented in the spatial domain giving the added watermarks. Then, two algorithms are presented based on this type of marks, the first one is devoted to the copyright embedding process and the second describes the steganographic scheme. Corresponding extractions of either the mark or the hiden message are then described. Finally, results are given in the last section for the two above schemes and robustness characteristics for the first scheme in terms of geometric attacks as well as the data hiding capacity for the second algorithm are discussed.

Abstract: In the last decade digital watermarking techniques have been devised to answer the ever-growing need to protect the intellectual property of digital still images, video sequences or audio from piracy attacks. Because of the proliferation of watermarking algorithms and their applications some benchmarks have been created in order to help watermarkers comparing their algorithms in terms of robustness against various attacks (i.e. Stirmark, Checkmark). However, no equal attention has been devoted to the proposition of benchmarks tailored to assess the watermark perceptual transparency. In this work, we study several watermarking techniques in terms of the mark invisibility through subjective experiments. Moreover, we test the ability of several objective metrics, used in the literature mainly to evaluate distortions due to the coding process, to be correlated with subjective scores. The conclusions drawn in the paper are supported by extensive experimentations using both several watermarking techniques and objective metrics.

Abstract: The EROS (European Research Open System) database hosted at the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France (C2RMF) is one of the largest database in the world of Cultural Heritage recognizedrecognised for its high resolution images. The French research project TSAR (Transfert Sécurisé d'images d'Art haute Resolution) wants to give the possibility to open this huge amount of art images in a secure and efficient way special attention to security of the data. We will use a mixture of techniques to assure the security of the data involving cryptography and watermarking techniques as well as compression and multi-resolution, region-level representation. These algorithms are especially optimized for high resolution art images. This means that the quality of the transmitted images will not be reduced. In this paper we will present an overall schema that provide an efficient, consistent solution for secure data browsing, viewing and transmitting, adoptable by any CH institution.

Vol. 6057SPIE Human Vision and Electronic Imaging, pp. 146-157

Abstract: Regarding the important constraints due to sub jective quality assessment, ob jective image quality assessment has recently been extensively studied. Such metrics are usually of three kinds, they might be Full Reference (FR), Reduced Reference (RR) or No Reference (NR) metrics. We focus here on a new technique, which recently appeared in quality assessment context: data-hiding-based image quality metric. Regarding the amount of data to be transmitted for quality assessment purpose, watermarking based techniques are considered as pseudo no-reference metric: A little overhead due to the embedded watermark is added to the image. Unlike most existing techniques, the proposed embedding method exploits an advanced perceptual model in order to optimize both the data embedding and extraction. A perceptually weighted watermark is embedded into the host image, and an evaluation of this watermark allows to assess the host image’s quality. In such context, the watermark robustness is crucial; it must be sufficiently robust to be detected after very strong distortions, but it must also be sufficiently fragile to be degraded along with the host image. In other words, the watermark distortion must be proportional to the image’s distortion. Our work is compared to existing standard RR and NR metrics in terms of both the correlation with sub jective assessment and of data overhead induced by the mark.

Abstract: This article presents a new lossless compression algorithm based on a Finite Radon Transform. The baseline of this work consist in encoding the difference between several similar finite Radon projections. Two differential encoding techniques are needed to efficiently encode the Radon transformed data. An intra-projection encoding technique is first performed, this differential encoding process takes benefit of the redundancy present in such projections. The second step consists in encoding the similarities between Radon projections, this is the inter-projection encoding procedure.
The used Finite Radon transform (called Mojette transform), allows to ensure both compression and data redundancy. The main novelty of this work is the use of a secure distributed storage or transmission tool in a lossless compression context.

Abstract: This paper describes a new kind of use for secure image transmission. A stream encryption method is presented, in which a key allows the authorized users to recover the original image. Our algorithm exploits the redundancy properties of the Mojette Transform. Anyone whom knows the appropriate key will be able to decode the original image whereas only a scrambled image can be decoded without this key. This data access scheme is moreover perfectly suited for a multiple description context. This method takes into account the Regions Of Interest (ROI), according to the received data, the image decoding is first performed in order to recover these ROIs.

Abstract: In this paper we propose a new joint encryption and lossless compression technique designed for large images. The proposed technique takes advantage of the Mojette transform properties, and can easily be included in a distributed storage architecture. The basic crypto-compression scheme presented is based on a cascade of Radon projection which enables fast encryption of a large amount of digital data. Standard encryption techniques, such as AES, DES, 3DES, or IDEA can be applied to encrypt very small percentages of high resolution images. As the proposed scheme uses standard encryption, and only transmits uncorrelated data along with the encrypted part, this technique takes benefit of the security related to the chosen encryption standard, here, we assess its performances in terms of processing time and compression ratio.

Abstract: A novel ordering of digital Radon projections co-efficients is presented here that enables progressive image reconstruction from low resolution to full resolution. The digital Radon transform applied here is the Mojette transform first defined by Guédon et al. in [1]. The Mojette transform is a natural way to generate redundancy to any specified degree and has been demonstrated to be useful for redundant representation for robust data storage and transmission. Combining this with the wavelet transform facilitates compression, i.e., joint source-channel coding, along with the additional property of scalability.

Abstract: The interest in objective quality assessment have significantly increased over the past decades. Several objective quality metrics have been proposed and made publicly available, moreover, several subjective quality assessment databases are distributed in order to evaluate and compare the metrics. However, several question arises: are the objective metrics behaviours constant across databases, contents and distortions? how significantly the subjective scores might fluctuate on different displays (i.e. CRT or LCD)? which objective quality metric might best evaluate a given distortion? In this article, we analyse the behaviour of four objective quality metrics (including the PSNR) tested on three databases. We demonstrate that the performances of the quality metrics can strongly fluctuate depending on the database used for testing. We also show the consistency of all metrics for two distinct displays.

Abstract: One of the most challenging issues for watermarkers is to tune the strength of their watermark embedding. The strength is usually an α parameter which is increased until a reasonable trade-off between invisibility and robustness is achieved. The watermarking community needs efficient Just Noticeable Difference (JND) masks to optimally embed the watermarks. The Fourier transform is particularly adapted to the Human Visual System (HVS) modeling. In this work, we evaluate the usability of the JND mask in the wavelet domain. The use of the mask in the DWT domain involves some approximations. We will see here that the HVS decomposition and the wavelet decomposition do not perfectly fit altogether. The efficiency of the so obtained mask is tested both in terms of invisibility and robustness.

Abstract: This paper presents a new approach to measure texture directions and estimate illumination tilt angle of 3D surface textures by using mojette transform. Feature vectors are generated from variances of 72 mojette transform projections with different project angles. The measured texture directions are compared with human perceptional judgement. Further more, we estimate illumination tilt angles by minimizing the Euclidean distance of the feature vector between the test image and the training sets. Experimental results show the effectiveness and accuracy of our proposed approach.

Abstract: A key point of image watermarking schemes is to select the image pixels or transformed coefficients where an embedded watermark would reach the optimal invisibility versus robustness trade-off. Human Visual System (HVS) based JND masks are thus useful to optimally adapt the watermark strength right below the visibility threshold. Most of the perceptual masks created so far for watermarking purpose are based on the empirical assumption that edges and/or textures allow the best watermark visual masking and thus ensures good invisibility properties. Nevertheless, although invisibility control in smooth areas is challenging, it could be interesting to extend the watermark in such areas since the robustness performances might increase. The goal of this paper is to use an advanced HVS model to manage invisibility in order to evaluate the robustness of watermarks embedded in smooth areas only, edges/textured areas only or in both areas. This study is further to the one presented in [1]. The robustness was tested against 89 attacked images (using Stirmark), results showed that including smooth areas in the JND mask increases the robustness while preserving good invisibility properties.

Abstract: The work presented here deals with a secure medical images scheme. The actually securities implemented in DICOM standard are the Confidentiality, authentication, Data integrity, the key management and digital signatures. We present here a new scheme of reversible encryption with a trusted third party framework. The main hypothesis of this work is to give the patient the only version of the image. The second main hypothesis is the double encryption jointly performed by the physician and the patient having each one an appropriate key. The tool used for the encryption process is the Mojette transform, which performs projections of the image. The trusted third party must store the hash functions composed of Mojette projections. The presented technique is both suitable for secure data storage and for secure data transmission. A distortion correction process is considered.

Vol. 4519Internet Multimedia Management Systems II, ITCOM, pp. 226-234
inproceedings
Abstract: Video (and other multimedia sources) distribution starts to implement industrial solutions that supposes no quality of service (QoS) properties for the network. To overcome congestion problems in the core of a worldwide Internet network, mirrors sites at the edges of the network are dispatched. Thus the QoS problem is only relevant for the network extremities. Nevertheless, this strategy implies to replicate the multimedia database (denoted as MDB) at multiple edge points to meet the real-time constraints and to establish specific mechanisms between mirror sites to satisfy customer needs as for video distribution. For each or both kind of constraints, we propose a unique data/network representation.
The initial information is supposed to be represented as scalable (optionally encrypted) encoded bitstreams. Each bitstream is rearranged into a geometrical buffer. From these data, the Mojette transform projects it onto hyperplanes where each point is called a bin. The two key points for Mojette distributed data are : additional projections can be computed, thus any subset of projections can reconstruct a given buffered flow, an incomplete set of projections can not lead to a partial reconstruction of the source. The first strategy consists in dispatching Mojette MDB (denoted as MMDB) along the network and to use different complementary sites for both the retrieval of the information (when a site is destroyed, other sites can regenerate it) and for its load-balanced distribution (according to the customer location, the nearest neighbor projections coming from different MMDB are used to reconstruct initial data).
In this paper, we focus on the mixture of this strategy with the industrial point of view. By replacing each of the mirror site by a set of specific MMDBs, applications like telemedecine or video will gain both specificity (e.g. medical multimedia report of a set of MMDB contain medical information relative to patients located in a given area) and security without sacrificing real-time constraints. Another important feature in this case, is the scalable source description that can be used. Each server of a MMDB set can contain a high number of projections corresponding to the prime sub-flow to ensure a reconstruction with only one subsidiary projection of any of the other MMDBs of the set. On the contrary, unimportant sub-flows are more distributed on the MMDB set to ensure the global load-balancing property of the network.

Abstract: This paper describes a new kind of use for image watermarking. A stream watermarking method is presented, in which a key allows the authorized users to recover the original image. Our algorithm exploits the redundancy properties of the Mojette Transform. Anyone whom knows the watermark key will be able to decode the original image whereas only a marked image can be decoded without this key. The presented algorithm is suitable for different applications when fragile and reversible watermarks are mandatory such as medical image watermarking, and it could also be used for a data access scheme (cryptography). A multiscale watermark variation is presented and can be used when different user profile levels are encountered.

Abstract: RÉSUMÉ.

ABSTRACT. We present here a new secure web oriented distributed storage technique based on a finite and exact Radon transform. The Mojette transform is used to split the numerical data into a tunable set of one dimensional projections. The main advantage of using the Mojette transform lies in the possibility offered to the user to separate the original data into a predefined number of subsets, while being able to regenerate lost data.

Abstract: A large number of numerical images flows on computer networks without including copyrights. To overcome such problems, watermarking has been used. This latter is a technique for labeling images. The principle used is to hide informations either in the image pixels or in any transformed space coefficients as DCT, DWT ...
Most of watermarking studies have been considered from a cryptographic point of view. Sophisticated watermarks must also have several qualities. They need to be perceptually invisible, undetectable, undeletable and resistant to both lossy data compression and any image processing. In order to improve these qualities, a Human Visual System (H.V.S) model has been used. The goal of this paper is to describe a new methodology in the selection of sites to be watermarked. This methodology takes into account some of the H.V.S characteristics which include high contrasts sensibility and the spatio-frequential selectivity of the perceptual channels. Hence sites to be selected have to belong both to edges of the image and a given spatio-frequential domain. For this latter, high and low frequencies are not used in order to make the watermark robust and perceptually invisible. Associated to an adaptation of the Weber law, this method allowed us to determine the strength of the watermark for each site. This algorithm has been applied on two different images (the well known 'boat' and 'iba'). These images have been watermarked by using the maximum strength for each site. According to the CCIR recommendations, subjective tests have been conducted with three observers. The visual quality of the watermarked images has been qualified as excellent, (No impairments are visible).

Vol. 87(6), pp. 1363-1383

Abstract: A tremendous amount of digital multimedia data is broadcasted daily over the internet. Since digital data can be very quickly and easily duplicated, intellectual property right protection techniques have become important and first appeared about fifty years ago (see [I.J. Cox, M.L. Miller, The First 50 Years of Electronic Watermarking, EURASIP J. Appl. Signal Process. 2 (2002) 126–132. [52]] for an extended review). Digital watermarking was born. Since its inception, many watermarking techniques have appeared, in all possible transformed spaces. However, an important lack in watermarking literature concerns the human visual system models. Several human visual system (HVS) model based watermarking techniques were designed in the late 1990’s. Due to the weak robustness results, especially concerning geometrical distortions, the interest in such studies has reduced. In this paper, we intend to take advantage of recent advances in HVS models and watermarking techniques to revisit this issue. We will demonstrate that it is possible to resist too many attacks, including geometrical distortions, in HVS based watermarking algorithms. The perceptual model used here takes into account advanced features of the HVS identified from psychophysics experiments conducted in our laboratory. This model has been successfully applied in quality assessment and image coding schemes M. Carnec, P. Le Callet, D. Barba, An image quality assessment method based on perception of structural information, IEEE Internat. Conf. Image Process. 3 (2003) 185–188, N. Bekkat, A. Saadane, D. Barba, Masking effects in the quality assessment of coded images, in: SPIE Human Vision and Electronic Imaging V, 3959 (2000) 211–219. In this paper the human visual system model is used to create a perceptual mask in order to optimize the watermark strength. The optimal watermark obtained satisfies both invisibility and robustness requirements. Contrary to most watermarking schemes using advanced perceptual masks, in order to best thwart the de-synchronization problem induced by geometrical distortions, we propose here a Fourier domain embedding and detection technique optimizing the amplitude of the watermark. Finally, the robustness of the scheme obtained is assessed against all attacks provided by the Stirmark benchmark. This work proposes a new digital rights management technique using an advanced human visual system model that is able to resist various kind of attacks including many geometrical distortions.

Abstract: This paper investigates predictive coding methods to compress images represented in the Radon domain as a set of projections. Both the correlation within and between discrete Radon projections at similar angles can be exploited to achieve lossless compression. The discrete Radon projections investigated here are those used to define the Mojette transform first presented by Guédon et al. [Psychovisual image coding via an exact discrete Radon transform, in: T.W. Lance (Ed.), Proceedings of the Visual Communications AND Image Processing (VCIP), May 1995, Taipei, Taiwan, pp. 562–572]. This work is further to the preliminary investigation presented by Autrusseau et al. [Lossless compression based on a discrete and exact radon transform: a preliminary study, in: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP), vol. II, May 2006, Toulouse, France, pp. 425–428]. The 1D Mojette projections are re-arranged as two dimensional images, thus allowing the use of 2D image compression techniques onto the projections. Besides the compression capabilities, the Mojette transforms brings an interesting property: a tunable redundancy. As the Mojette transform is able to both compress and add redundancy, the proposed method can be viewed as a joint lossless source-channel coding technique for images. We present here the evolution of the compression ratio depending on the chosen redundancy.

Abstract: Asymmetric color matching demonstrates that receptive-field organization accounts for large color shifts induced by chromatic patterns (Monnier & Shevell, 2003, 2004). Here, we used temporally-varied chromatic inducing light to infer receptive-field organization using a method that does not require color matching. The shifts in color appearance from temporally varied inducing light were consistent with the same +s/-s spatially antagonistic neural receptive field described in previous work. The response of this type of receptive-field, which is found only in the visual cortex, increases with S-cone stimulation at its center and decreases with S-cone stimulation in the surround. The measurements also showed a negligible influence of temporal inducing frequency from 0.5 to 4 Hz.
